Not only is Dr. Obed an experienced dermatologist who is launching his own practice in Fort Lauderdale, FL. this week, but he’s also passionate about teaching medical students and residents at his college, as well as educating junior high and high school students about preventive skincare.

“Ninety percent of photoaging (dermatoheliosis) is sun-related and can be avoided,” Dr. Obed said. “Most of the skin problems I see can be prevented by becoming more conscientious of the sun as well as getting screened early and regularly.”

When Dr. Obed’s not educating others, publishing research papers, or caring for patients, he enjoys working as a ringside physician. He is entrusted to care for elite athletes both inside and outside the ring and even makes appearances on ESPN and other television networks for professional boxing and mixed martial arts events.

Dr. Obed and his professionally trained staff provide the most advanced and effective treatments for a wide variety of skin diseases. Even though it’s said “beauty is only skin deep,” Dr. Obed says that there is much more to it than that. As a specialist, he sees the far reaching impact his care has on the lives of his patients on a daily basis.

Dr. Obed’s top three tips for preventive skincare

1.) Sun protection. “Sun protection is the bread and butter of preventive dermatology,” Dr. Obed said. Before venturing out, apply a generous amount of sunscreen and reapply it frequently (every two to three hours). Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which will block both UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of at least 30. Remember that you can still get sun damage when the sky is overcast.

2.) Start now. Take a proactive approach to caring for your skin as soon as possible. If you’re a teenager, start now to develop healthy habits for your skin. Many people don’t realize that even one instance of sunburn can increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

3.) Preventive screening. Everyone should see a dermatologist every few years to get screened for skin cancer as everyone is susceptible to skin problems. “At Broward Dermatology we provide care for patients of all ages including men, women and children,” Dr. Obed said. “We’re really family-friendly and down to earth.”
