A Jeweler’s Guide to Giving
Owner of Harrcourt Jewels, Inc., Harriet Wigod, offers expert advice for finding the perfect piece for that special someone this holiday season.
Jewelry is a popular and special holiday gift for many reasons. It makes the wearer feel cherished, can reflect their personal style and can even tell a story. With so many glittering gems on display to choose from these days, how does the wise shopper pick just the right piece for their loved one this season…or any other time?
We had the pleasure of working with and learning from Chicago’s trusted top jeweler and founding owner of Harrcourt Jewels, Harriet Wigod. Harriet brings more than twenty years of knowledge and experience in the jewelry business to her clients. As a native of Chicago, Harriet has enjoyed working with top jewelers all over the world. Over the years she has earned a reputation as a well-respected family jeweler. In 2005, Harriet established Harrcourt Jewels Inc. Read on for some advice that you can take to the jewelers.
Harriet’s tips for picking out the perfect piece
1) Do your homework. If you are buying a gift for someone, know their personal preferences. Do they wear silver or gold? What is their favorite color? Do they have any allergies to certain metals? The last thing you want to do is buy someone a pair of silver earrings, only to discover that they don’t have their ears pierced and are horribly allergic to silver. In turn, if you know someone is buying jewelry for you, help them out by dropping some subtle hints to guide them in the right direction.
2) Take your time. Don’t buy blindly. Figure out what you’re seeking style-wise before you enter the store. Ask others for input. Bring someone along with you to help you work together with the jeweler in choosing the right piece. This type of teamwork is what Harriet calls a “home run.”
3) Choose quality. Buy the best quality you can afford. Jewelry is an investment and can appreciate in value. Before purchasing a piece, turn it over and make sure it’s as nicely finished on the back as it is in the front. This is one of the more obvious signs of quality craftsmanship.
4) Stay classic. When in doubt, always choose something more traditional and classic. Simplicity is the best way to go. The jewelry’s beauty, quality and lasting value will make the piece memorable, not its cutting-edge novelty.
5) After you buy: Remember that once you buy your treasured piece, you still must take care of it. Keep your jewelry in one place so that you always know where it is when you’re not wearing it. Enjoy your investment!
